The Death of Juniors Deli's, Westwood , CA
or
Junior goes on a Silent Retreat

Juniors Deli was reported to have entertained the likes of Mel Brooks and Bruce Willis.  I was never graced by their presence while dining at Juniors. I had much better company, my two daughters, Bridget L'Chiam and Honor Moshe.
We had numerous celebrations in the dining room and even more at home with their extended deli.

So like many Angelino's, I was shocked into the new year with the morose announcement that Juniors was closing.

Never before had I felt so homeless. Where would I spent the holidays? I don't belong to a temple (for what temple would have an Irish Catholic as a member?) Juniors was always willing to overlook this blemish on my soul and readily serve me everyday, (outside of Yom Kippur.) Honestly, I don't know where else to go in Los Angeles on Christmas.

I once secretly confessed to my good friend, Rabbi David Goldhirsch that during the High holidays I often feel like doing something Jewish. He asked me: "Like what?" I said I want to go to a Jewish Deli and order something on rye bread. Juniors as it was had become my meat and potatoes of Kosher fare.

Juniors, you were kind to me when I miss pronounced Challah, hid your chuckle when I asked if the sandwiches come with a pickle and patiently explained what kreplah was. Thank you for taking pity on my poor Irish soul and welcoming me to your padded booths.

I wasn't born in Ireland, I was born on the east coast, on a U.S. Naval base in Cherry Point, North Carolina but I couldn't let my connection to Israel die with Juniors ousting (seems a rent rate hike was the official cause of death). As many of you were in the process of securing your resolutions, I affirmed my commitment to find a new Deli. Henceforth this blog was born and the tour of Jewish Delis Los Angeles had begun.

This blog is intended to aid fellow goyum into the wonderfully  world of The Jewish Delicatessen. Every few weeks, my daughters, Bridget and Honor will select and review a new deli in Los Angeles.

Please join us on our excursion and comment often.

Kind regards,

Pogue Mahone
